Shifter-Sliding Plastic at Base Broken

Hi Friends,
I have an 06 Automatic NB. The Black sliding plastic at the base of my Shifter has broken into many small pieces. The VW dealer is asking $400 to replace it(parts & labor). I'm trying to see if I can find a replacement and possibly install it myself. I can already see that the absence of it causes all the gears to be illuminated on the dash. Any help would be incredible! Thanks, Mike

I too have the same problem with the rubber insert. I have a 2006 Beetle (tiptronic) and dealer says it only comes with whole assembly. Haven't had any luch with this online... Have you been able to find out where one can get this? Thanks

If the dealer says it's an assembly, it's a good bet it is. The new assembly can be ordered, at a discount, from many online VW Dealer Parts Depts and nline VW Resellers. The alternative is a used assembly from a dismantler or individual doing a part out. Try a thread titled "WTB - '06 Tiptronic Shifter Console Bezel" and explain what it is you're after (it is probably a part of the shifter bezel assembly and not the shifter itself (I'll look and see if the Bentley has an exploded view), put it here and in the classifieds over on the Vortex ( www.vwvortex.com ) in the NB section.

Of course a DIYer can do the swap, if not, a Dealer Tech couldn't do it! (lol). This may or may not be the same as the shifter used for the Tip in the pre-'06 models. A Dealer should be able to supply you with the proper p/n based on your VIN, then you can start searching the web.
