My 98 had this problem but ONLY after it was driven at op. temp. for "extended periods" in excess of 15 mins. My problem turned out to be a failing cyl #3 and a leaky headgasket, but the problem had been ongoing for months prior to my owning the car. I hope yours is just a relay or speed sensor.
