Default fan switch

I am having what appears to be this problem, but I can't see the pictures so I'm not entirely sure. I just bought a 2001 turbo NB. After less than a week, the water pump broke. Replaced that, replaced the timing belt and the thermostat while I was at it. Then the alternator began shorting, so I replaced that as well. 2 weeks later, the fan switch stopped working. Then, the turbo stopped working. I've owned the car for less than a month.

Anyhow, I pull the switch out and the tube behind it is clear plastic. I don't see a metal part anywhere attached to this. Should I be seeing one? Does this mean that the switch is broken and that I should attempt to take apart the dash and re-glue it? I checked the fuses and they all seem good. The dial just isn't operating the fan, which in turn keeps the A/C from coming on.

Does anybody have those pictures?
