The engine may have been okay initially (sounds like it was in dire @!#$! mode). If the mechanic didn't, or couldn't, properly seat the head the continuous higher than normal temperatures (post repair) could have let the initial damage run its course. As it was still leaking coolant something was
still in need of attention before it should have been driven again.
