Could be the starter squawking...though that is more common on manual trans models. Timing belts usually give more of a "whoosh" sound at idle when going bad.
Have someone else start it while you have your head under the hood. If it's on the driver's side, starter. If it's on the pass side...timing belt related (roller, tensioner, etc) or something on the accessory drive.
If there is any doubt, which it sounds like there is, get your timing belt, water pump, rollers, tensioner and everything else replaced ASAP. Go with a quality kit that has a metal impeller water pump and make sure the one-time use only stretch bolts for the motor mount are replaced and torqued correctly.
