This is one of the reasons that for dashes I love products like Prima Nero. They have a nice matte or "concours" finish. It looks clean, but not overly shiny. I would look for something along those lines.

But as with everything, to each his/her own. Some people like the high gloss look. I personally prefer to keep that high gloss on the outside of my car.

There's no right or wrong way, just what works best for you.

And on the Armor All comment, I used to strongly believe that as well, and I believe that this used to be the case, but with both the material in the Beetle dash and the fact that Armor All wouldn't still be in business if their product cracked dashes, not even taking into account all the chemical changes I'm sure they have made over the years, Armor All is safe. It's nowhere near the best product out there in my humble opinion, but it is safe.
