What they are saying is, the windshield crack is too large and is not of the type of crack that can be repaired, which many insurance companies will waive the deductible, as the repair costs about $40. The cracking of your windshield requires you to replace your windshield. Assuming you have comprehensive coverage on your car, you have a deductible to pay. Because of your young age, that deductible is commonly $500 -$1000 in order to keep the insurance premiums as low as possible. If you want a low or no deductible on your car, then you will also have to pay the increased cost of that. Typically, small starred type cracks are the only kinds of cracks that are repairable...and it must be out of the line of vision.
I went to www.89glass.com and got a quote for $276 for replacement.

Insurance companies aren't crooks.....you have to understand what you are paying for. Most car policies do have a deductible for glass breakage, though some do not. That is the choice by the buyer of the insurance policy, not the insurance company, which affects the cost of car insurance. I like to keep my ins premiums low, so I carry a $500 deductible on my cars. A broken windshield will cost less than $500, so I know it will be out of my pocket. But over the long run, I save more money by doing this.
