The RX8 (like its predecessor RX7) have a rotary engine. They need to be running at high RPMs to have any kind of power. But, they do turn out some power ... The Mazda 787B race car and rotary engines were banned from the Le Mans race for being too powerful.
Personally, I prefer the look of the newer RX7 over the RX8. Unfortunately, there's none of those available in the US...
