Beetles are 2 platforms behind the golf on which it is based making it pretty outdated. The reason the old ones lasted so long is they were cheap basic cars, the new beetle isn't.
VW frankly, just didn't care about our cars and never did proper updates to them. What hopefully they are doing are making a beetle like thing that they actually put effort into.
