I can help you with this one! (If you have a hatchback as opposed to a trunk.)
There is a trick… Right after you use the switch to pop the hatchback, quickly push the drivers door shut. The air pressure inside the car is increased by the door shutting and ( at least in our bug) this causes the hatch to pop up past the point where it relocks.
This is also handy when there is a lot of snow holding the hatchback down.
