after changing his timing belt, he asked me to also change his oil while I had the car jacked up on stands.
took out the drain plug, changed the filter, went to screw in the drain plug... it "buttered" and never got tight.
I pulled it out, and only saw one hint of what was to come...
one tiny sliver of a thread coil on the very end of the plug.
I then stick my pinky finger into the drain hole.. and out comes EVERY SINGLE THREAD... someone before me (do not know who, doesn't matter) managed to strip the threads on his oil pan to within about 5 ft-lb of the end of their life.
Of course Tom has the one or two year only, New beetle only APH 1.8t motor... $205 My cost dealership visit later.. he has a new pan, cap for the oil sensor hole, gasket for turbo oil drain, and hardware for the sensor cap.
I would say he is VERY lucky my dealership had such a unique pan on the shelf. considering they don't find it useful to stock the one time use bolts for timing belt jobs.
Anyways, it looks like with his recent posts, Tom is quite happy with the state of his car.
Enjoy buddy! thats TDI Automatic mileage there.
