If you have a squeeling timing belt, he recommended not driving it or little driving (like to be fixed) until you get it replaced.
I'm new to the Beetle world and don't know alot, but figured sharing the info might help.

The tensioner pulley may squeal if the bearing is going or if it's locked up the back side of the belt will squeal as it slides against the pulley. I had that happen to me on a Mk.2 Jetta--it didn't take long to wear 1/2 way through the belt from the back side!
