If you have never seen the motor is is located inside the "trunk lid" above the glass. you have to remove the interior trim to see it. It is a motor that turns a large nylon gear that in turn pushes two nylon "push rods" that ride inside of metal tubes. I am guessing that the noise you hear is the motor or the large gear slipping because the push rods or the spoiler itself is bound up. probably time to get a new motor and / or lubricate the spoiler hinges. Some people spray a lubricant into the metal tubes to lubricate the push rods but I worry about dirt collected by the lube in the tube causing more problems...hehe...lube in the tube...hehe
