$400-$600 for an aftermarket unit? Are you talking about at the dealer? I'd say much lower in general. My unit only cost maybe $150 tops (hubby got it for me) and I got free installation from where I got it (Circut City). I'm sure Best Buy and the like would do the same.
I'd probably personally just get an aftermarket unit if you can't get VW to take care of that for free. I have a Sony and its blue and red lighting matches the interior lighting perfectly, and there are many others out there that do. This way you won't have any issues with entering codes when you change the battery, etc.
