Sorry to renew a older thread but I have some good stuff to contribute. I worked for a bike shop for a 1.5 years and Im familiar with bike racks.

There are 3 basic types that you can use, a roof rack, a strap-on trunk rack, one one that mounts into a hitch. It depends on how much you plan on using it and how much you want to spend.

Roof rack can be super expensive....$300+ depending on the type of system you decide to go with. I use THULE stuff and its awesome, they have spare parts available easily.

Trunk Rack. The least expensive. Id recommend a SARIS Bones rack. Itll run ya about $160 to carry 3 bikes and will fit a variety of cars you may have.

Hitch rack. This will run about the cost of a roof rack. about $150 for the hitch and then another $175+ for a rack. Its super easy to get the bikes on and off but itll limit your access to the trunk beacuse the rack is in the way.

I just tonight scored a used THULE roof rack base and Im going to use my current trays until I can upgrade later. I cant wait to get everything installed!
