I'm trying to figure out if you are dealing with a couple issues here or just one. The rough engagement etc points to the DMF, but if its not knocking or making other odd noises I'm not so sure. But the stiff pedal gives me another clue. I'd try to look up underneath the dash and work the clutch pedal with your hand. There is an over-center spring in the top of the clutch pedal assembly that helps with clutch effort/feel. If that has broken/popped loose (there are some plastic parts in there) then it would make the clutch feel stiff and not have very smooth travel.

It also might not hurt to try bleeding the clutch to see if that helps any. But it is also possible that it is not releasing fully, possibly due to broken clutch or pressure plate springs.

Do the easy stuff first, then go from there.
