After 250,000 miles of running 40psi on two VWs I can say your inaccurate about this. 40k miles is about all a tire will last at the suggested inflation. MOST tires are rated for up to 44psi. Less Rolling resistence = better MPG.

Both my Diesels run 40PSI and I ran 40PSI in my gas 2.0 for it's entire life -- 110k miles. I put one set of tires on it in that time period. The diesels I squeel tires more often and tend to chew them up faster. But that's with or without added PSI.

At 34PSI (the suggested rating on my Bug) I get 40/46, at 40PSI I get 43/48. I'd get 50 if my subframe wasn't bent.

On the Jetta: 34PSI = 38/45 / 40 = 41/48 (sometimes 50, I've had 3 50MPG tanks and they were all at 40PSI -- with one slow leak, mind you -- and a constant 60MPG).

Higher inflation does not wear out a tire any faster if you're running 40k rated. My 60k rated all seasons were cheap and fell apart around 45k miles. I don't believe it was due to the pressure, they were just SUPER cheap tires.

40PSI is what everyone concerned about fuel economy should be running. Please provide me something other than paper science that shows me otherwise, I'm going on 3 cars now that suggest that higher PSI don't wear the rubber out any faster. It wears out about the same. The added FE increase is worth the extended wear, even if it does. We're talking less than 10% increaed wear I'm sure.

THis from someone who logs 40k miles a year for about 7 years now.
