You're right the box effects the sub in many ways. I was pretty lucky with this one and got it right on the nose @ .85 sf. The 10" sub requires a sealed box between .65 and 1.25 sf. I was right at about .95 sf before I lined the inside with 4 layers of sound dampening material and a half inch of foam. First time I've used foam to line the interior of a sealed box, it's required by Pioneer for this sub. I have to say though, I love the sound of the box.
Here's a few pictures of the depth of the enclosure, I believe I went 14" out from the corner one way and 13" the other way towards the rear of the car.
