If you are running your New Beetle this year post your info here. If you do not have a photo thread with a mod list attached then list what mods, suspension, wheels, tires, you are running. Good luck this year and have fun.

Ok, there was this time that I had already lapped a Z06 vette at Watkins Glenn, and I was comming up to lap him again at the boot, when all of a sudden...

Or how about the time that I smoked and EVO VIII down the back straightaway at Pocono North, when suddenly I had to hit my brakes to avoid the Lotus Elise that was slow as a turd...

Or how about the time that I was putting down .75 sec and 1.33 sec faster lap times than two Audi Avanti A4's from New York at Beaver Run...

hehehe, well one of them is a true story, up to you to decide which one...

I'll be running my car in a bunch of events this summer. My suspension setup takes me into prepared unfortunately, but the good news is that I now have the power to keep up. Last year, I had the handling, but not the power. That changed!

Power:
Race injectors (PD150 OEM)
2.5" TB exhaust
Rocketchip Stage 3 (soon)
...thinking of maybe a custom CAI as well

Suspension:
Bilstein Sports
Vogtland VR6 springs
H-Sport 27mm front swaybar
H-Sport 35mm rear swaybar
O-Bar
225/50R16 Ventus RS2 Z212s (street-legal race tire) on 16" alloys (Raves...they're beat up, but they're light)

You probably don't want to get me started telling stories in general, but I will share my top Solo memory since there's something of a moral to the story (WARNING - this is rather long ...).

It was Spring 1978 (I had to glance at the trophy to remind how long ago it was!) and a local we'll call "C.C. Rider" (to protect the guilty) had an unbroken string of autocross wins that stretched over a couple of seasons and an ego-fed mouth that likewise never hesitated pointing out the fact. To say CC grated on a LOT of people's nerves in the (now defunct) Oil Capital Auto Club would be an understatement.

Thanks to OCAC's relaxed version of SCCA's classes of the day Art Horn's (my rally codriver) 65 'fuelie' Corvette could compete directly with CC's much modified 240Z at the club's first-ever 'Mirrocross.' Since it promised to be a competition where Yank horsepower might just overwhelm Japanese sophistication Art promised me his Vette and we made plans to go take CC down a peg or three Sunday but once Art loaned the car to his ex-wife the night before - who found a way to blow out an F.I. diaphgram of some kind - the Vette was suddenly out of the picture.

To my great surprise I was offered the Z-car of "Dave" Sunday morning. He told me he'd matched CC's car modification-for-modification over the years but could not find a way to outrun him. His frustration led to his letting me take a shot at CC in a perfectly capable car. Who was I to argue?

The course was dead straight past the timing lights and drag race style starts were possible if the pair lined up cared to blast off when the manned green light was illuminated. However, since one's timer didn't start until the car broke the timing beam you could start your run pretty much whenever you wanted to. We chose to jump the start and see if we could rattle CC's cage. The starter dude pointed at CC, who nodded, and then looked right and pointed at me but instead of nodding and awaiting the green light I just took off. It wasn't a great run - I think I tipped a pylon or two, but so did CC. We were effectively tied after Run 1. Of course, since jumping the start didn't accomplish the task we needed to wait him out at the start of Run 2 - something CC fully expected, as it turned out ...

So there we were, lined up for Run 2 and watching the starter. He points to me. I nod. He looks to his right, points at CC and receives a nod. The green light comes on and two Z-cars sit there unmoving. The starter lets go of the button, points at me, points at CC, receives nods, turns on the green light and two Z-cars sit there motionless again.

The starter gets a bit more animated on the third go-round so when the green light comes on I let Dave's car twitch forward about an inch and then watched CC make the launch of a freaking lifetime! He flew out of the chocks like he had JATO - it really was an awesome start! Unfortunately for him he realized I hadn't actually gone anywhere and somehow simultaneously laid on the brakes, snapped his head around to look for me and managed to stop just shy of breaking his timing light beam. I chose to blast off when I saw his reverse lights come on and I remember glancing over to see the shock in his eyes as we passed going in opposite directions! I recall little of the actual run since I was chuckling about the look on his face through that entire, pylon-free lap! While I didn't see any part of his run I'm told that once I'd passed him CC slammed his car back into first gear, dumped the clutch, burned rubber past the timing light and basically was all over the place collecting pylons like a madman! I'm told it was quite a sight.

In a wholly uncharacteristic display of humility CC looked me up after the run and said, "That was a great run Mike, since you have the fastest time so far you get to choose which course you'll do last. Do you know which one that will be?" I looked him in the eye and said, "You couldn't beat that run if your life depended on it. Just take your pick of lanes, I won't be running any more today."

You could almost see the competitive spark in his eye fade. He made the last run alone and it was as uninspired a drive as he'd maybe ever made, which handed me my first-ever Fast Time of Day, a class win, the admiration of my car owner and a great story I've told too damned many times now.

The moral, you ask? No matter how successful you are in autosport there is always someone out there capable of outrunning you on a given day so don't go rubbing your vanquished competition's noses in the dirt lest you effectively set yourself up for a painful dose of reality!

Here, by the way, are pics of the only trophies I won driving someone else's car that I didn't give to the owner -

You may have told that story many times but I never heard it, and yes it is a good one. I love that trophy and I sure wish we had mirror runs these days.
Well no pictures but I did have a blast. I ran a best time of 54.402. Once the times are posted I will post fastest and slowest times for comparrison. It was a wet cold day (no rain, just a wet race surface) to run but it was fun. I was co-chair and also got to tech some cars. Man I love running that beetle.

I race autocross as well. My car poses as a herbie of sorts - 53 HS. I also rallycross him. Hes totally stock, with the exception of the tires - Kumho Ecsta MXs for autox and Bridgestone Blizzaks for rallycross. We do well I suppose; he won me driver of the year last year, so he can't be too bad. Although, I assume its mostly because they don't see many beetles racing. :P

here are some autox pics:

and a turn I so amazinlgy messed up:

some rallycross:

enjoy.
