OK...just got back from the VW Press Event at the Playboy Mansion where they unveiled 5 new special edition VWs.
The most important to us is the fabled Triple White NB Convertible, and Ive gotta say it looks phenomenal. The bright white interior with cool litle NB Convertible Icons on the headrests and some other fun details. They are only going to make 3000 of them apparantly and they will be released to the dealers on April 1st (no foolin!). To answer the 20 dollar question...the top is actually black, but the top boot is white...so top down it looks as white as can be and then top up you dont have to worry about the upkeep with the white top. The other big reason for the color choice is the material they are using. The old Beetle's tops were vinyl, the New Beetle's top is a stayfast canvas type material..and brigh white canvas would get dirty just looking at it. So I feel it is a reasonable choice for them to make.
The other VWs were a Wolfsburg Edition Jetta and then two new sporty models called the Farenheit GTi and GLi based on the new Rabbit GTi and the Jetta. Really nice looking rides in bright colors with color matching stitching and details in the interiors. Only 1200 of each will be produced and each one will be numbered in the series with a special badge on the steering wheel.
The final release was the promotion for the First Act VW Guitar giveaway for VWs sold until the end of the year, starting tomorrow. The guitar plugs right into a special port in the glove box and plays through the radio. Each guitar will be numbered to match the vin number of your car and hey feature some really cool little VW details like VW logo knobs and such. Truly a hot collectible in it's own right.
I spent some time chating with the folks in charge of the new model projects, in particular the person in charge of the New Beetle. They are working on some other special editions and I made a few suggestions. I thought the Champagne Edition would be cool with classy colors and burl wood dash trims and such. Maybe do a Jeans Bug with denim upholstery, bring back the Sports Bug with the black hood on a yellow car and some racy graphics and wheels...basically draw on some of the past special editions and have a little fun.
The location for this event was really cool...cant get much cooler than the Playboy Mansion. It was a visual delight to say the least.
I will post photos as soon as I get a chance.
So watch for these new models next year!! And get in line for the Triple White...I think they will sell fast!
Cheers!
