Engine 2.0L 2000 COST?

I have a 2000 bettle (85K) :mad: I just bought for my daughter. I had some electrical work done, new starter, tune up, etc... Put $1200 down on that.

Then the next day the transmission went out, I just put $2800 on that.

So with the purchase price of $5750 + $1200 + 2800 I am down $9750... Now it is overheating, the ABS lights are one as well as the check engine light. I just got a call from the shop and they stated it is failing a block test.

so question, anyone have a ball park figure on what an engine rebuild should cost, and should I just try to sell this with the problems and cut my loses...

It is a nice car with leather, GLS, sunroof, new stereo (had to replace that), etc.

Thoughts and advise?

Ouch. Wow, you got hit with all the biggies. I am betting the waterpump went and it overheated badly to then do this damage. The waterpumps have plastic impellors and are a known problem. If you were the original owner of the car you'd be covered :( under a 10yr/100K powertrain warranty--it saved my wife and I last week on her '01 Jetta 2.0L. I think, as is, you have a paperweight not worth much--maybe $2500, so, you gotta fix it and drive it, or fix it to not take as big of a bath. Sorry. VW repairs aren't cheap.

What shop are you taking it too?

My first thought is to see what codes are being thrown. With the plethera of problems this does not seem to be block related.

If it's over heating, when? are the radiator fans coming on? if not it could be a bad fan module or dead fans. is the water temp sensor simply bad? I believe the 2000's had a black sensor, they need a green one. a bad sensor would cause a reported over heating and a check engine light.

No ideas about the ABS light accept for that there's a code that can be retrieved which will tell you what needs to be looked at.

Edit: if it is over heating, be careful! you can crack/warp the block

i am being told they can't get the codes... I am taking to a local place called Dallas Precision, they seem to come highly recommended and it is a week before they can even get me an appointment.

Any ideas on what an engine would cost?

Any shop that cannot get you codes should be out of business. try finding someone in your area here (http://anglo-hexon.net:88/beowulf9/tdi/vagcom/) who owns a vagcom they can read the codes and may be able to offer more help and guidence.

So... can anyone give me even a ballpark estimate on an engine rebuild? $500, $1500, $3500?

They can't even look at it until next week so I just have to sit and wonder...

call it 12-15 hrs of work X 100/hr
plus 1300 in new parts

What is this block test they speak of? If it has a cracked block you can't rebuild it. If they mean it's has a warped head. Then a new head will fix it. If they mean it's not passing a leak down test then new valve seats will fix that one. If it's not passing a compression test a simple re-ring is in order. If it's a blown water pump then you need to do a full timing belt replacement and put a new pump in.

I'm not trying to be rude or short. It's just that the information given isn't enough to make a diagnosis or give a proper estimate. A new long block (head and block with all internals installed) is about $3500. You can find a fairly low mileage one from a breaker for $1000 - $1500. However I have never heard of a broken block outside of someone doing massive power upgrades on the 2.0. It's a very robust lil motor with a couple tiny lil crippling foibles that if not caught in time can cost a bloody fortune.

Transmission sounds astronomically high for a rebuild but if they did it right and it really does need a new motor. May as well do it. At least you know the car will be a good runner for many many years to come.
