2001 manual 1.8T :D

Started to notice a problem when accelerating hard with the RPM's increasing drasticallly with no noticable speed increase. Initially this was only noticed once in awhile, and predominantly in 3rd gear, but now it is much more frequent and in all gears.

Any Ideas, and is this something a DIY'r could handle??

Sounds like the clutch is fried. It can be a DIY if you have the tools, book, a weekend, someone to help, and not afraid of a challange. If you smell burning manure it is the clutch for sure. I have replaced mine before in my garage and have also upgraded trannys.

That smell you are talking about, would you see smoke as well? I went to put mine in reverse lastnight and it wouldn't shift, my driveway happens to be on an incline so I coasted out to put my car in 1st on the street, nothing happened. I managed to get it back into the driveway. Clutch? Transmission? 1999 Beetle. 99k+ miles on it. Help?!

Yes, sometimes there is smoke. Sometimes there is not any smoke.
Sure sounds like the clutch has worn out.
