New Beetle 98-02 Factory SnowBox Removal
All of our NB's come delivered from the factory with an air-intake contraption that is quite difficult to understand called the SnowBox. This unit is VERY restrictive to the airflow feeding the engine and seems to do more harm than good. Let's get it out!
Tools needed for this Mod:
Jack / jack stand / wheel blocks
Factory lug wrench / wheel lock adapter
TORX Driver set
Metric socket set
Torque wrench (if available)
Approximately 90 minutes labor time
The first step in the process is to loosen the lug nuts on the front, driver's side wheel and jack-up the front, driver's side of your NB. Make sure you use the body rail as your jacking point (NOT the rocker panel). Once your safety jackstand/wheel blocks are in place, remove the lug nuts on the front, driver's side wheel and remove. Our next step is to remove the wheel well liner. Locate and remove the 13 screws that hold the liner in-place with your TORX Driver. There are five screws on the inner liner (see picture below), and the rest are located, just to the inside of the fender lip around the radius of the wheel well.
