Great Pictures. Some really nice NBs. I noticed that most seem to have what I call "City lights" inside the headlamps. Is this correct. US model NBs do not have them , but US version Golf do.

Can you tell me how they work.
Do they come on when the parking lights are on and when on low beam . Does UK require headlights to be on anytime your are driving. Please explain all you can about them. I want to put in stall them in my 01 US Version TDI.

The city lights you are talking about are what are called "side lights" in the UK and are a legal requirement. Basically there is a 5watt bulb in the headlamp cluster that lights up when the switch is clicked around to the verticle position. With the headlamp switch on the 2nd (to the right) click both the sidelight bulb and the main dipped beam bulbs are on. From about 1985 up until about 1990 all UK cars had to have a their main dipped beam bulb lit up on a reduced power when their side lights were on. The wiring was basically done so that the 12 volt supply was routed through a resistor on it's way to the headlamp bulb. This regulation was dropped though in about 1990 as i said just leaving the 5 watt bulb.

You don't need to have any lights on in the UK during daylight hours unless the visibility drops really bad, it's not like in California where there are stretches of road where they have to be lit.
