I'm still new to Vag-Com, but willing to share what little I know and learn from others too.
I used VC yesterday to change the door unlocking function from click once for driver's door, click twice for passanger's door to one click unlocks both doors. Wife really likes that better.

I can't seem to find it, but I know there's a huge list of all members (if they register) of people with vagcoms. I know I've received a few emails from people who found the list and asked if I could read their codes.
Anyone remember the link?

I was going to add that info as well. I've got the latest Bentley CD (includes '05 NB/NBC) and the latest VAG-COM cable (can be used with MkV vehicles and the B6 Passat).
By the way, THIS (http://www.steve-hall.com/cgi-bin/VAG-Locator.pl) is the VAG Tool Locator database.

 Since VW won't give us OUR SKC anymore, we need to find a way to get it without VW. It can be read with the apporpiate software. I do know buy looking at other forums there is software to get it. (Also a thread on retreiving the radio code). Although it may be too expensive for us common tinkers. Perhaps we should do our own searchs, internet and local shops, about other ways to retrieve it.
It is my understanding that Vag-Com's (Ross-Tech's software) writer has the knowledge to get it from the car. He won't incoperate that feature into VC because a theif may get easier access to steal a car and doesn't want to aid and abet a theif. Can someone explain why this would be?
Prehaps we should start a letter writing campaign to VW about this and/or requesting our SKC. As you know the squeeky wheel gets the grease.

SKC= Secret Key Code, a seven digit number. It is used to program keys and other stuff. Is is only available from VW and they won't give it to us, the owner, anymore. Vag-Com does require this code to perform some functions which limits its use. Although VC is still a very functional tool.

Well this VAGCOM thread paid off today for member tonybalido he dropped by this morning and we read his codes and it was a common and easily repaired problem. Replaced two bad vacuum hoses from my roll I keep in the car all the time, cleared codes and he was on his way in half an hour. He praised this forum and is getting a taste of what the New Beetle community is all about.:thewave:

The old 4-digit SKC is applicable at all times. The newer 7-digit SKC requires a date issued, from which the numbers are derived, so it is in effect a paired key. GEKO doesn't use any sort of key, it simply connects to the car's ECU.
So here you see the problem: dealerships can no longer issue SKCs because they can't get them using the new GEKO system VW has implemented. Your car is plugged in to their computer, which is in communication via internet to a central system. In other words, the security handshake between car ECU and the VW system is no longer in human hands. There is NO SKC.
So even if you had a buddy at the dealership, he couldn't get you an SKC if he tried.
Legally, this is bad. As owners of the equipment we are entitled to some form of code to gain entry to the system. However, if you gain entry, you can disable the Immobilizer and basically be able to start the car... if you're savvy about stealing cars.
If you're not, you can always do it the long way:
1. get the VIN
2. call a dealership, provide the VIN, buy a key (for $120) or get someone there to do it for you
3. break in to the car
4. connect to the OBDII port and run the SKC retriever program (whatever THAT may be, the only one I know of in the USA is the VA Code software by American Auto Lock, which costs $2000)
5. input the SKC and match the key to the car
Hmmm... this reminds me to cover up the VIN so someone'd have to actually break in to the car to get it.

Paultakeda:
You answered a question that I have always wanted to know - the immoblizer can be disabled! Didn't know that the SKC would allow this. On another forum, this question was asked without a clear answer. Secondly, knowing the SKC and using a key will get you going legally or not. This is just simply key matching.
With all this said, I still would like to have my SKC. VW must have had some internal issues with the visibility of the SKC. Although I do believe that if a theif wants my Seaweed, he will find a way to get it, immo or no.

Disable may not be the right word. It could be "bypass". Basically, having the SKC allows a savvy thief to steal the car real quick.
