what all is needed to do this. I had a 99 beetle given to me from my brother. My daughter will be getting it, and i dont want her in a manual.
Sell it and buy an automatic one.
It will be far cheaper in the longrun.
But, more than selling it, I think she needs to learn to drive a manual.
It's not that hard at all, I got the hang of it in 1 day. :D

Does she have muscle control problems? Or you just want to make it easier to be on a cellphone or otherwise distracted while driving?
...
My applogies. I don't mean to insult; I just find it insulting when people don't think their children should learn how to drive a manual. Daughters especially, as if it's some special skill that the child might not be able to master.
So right; I'll stop making a donkey of myself and list a few parts that would have to be changed for you.
Transmission (obviously), ECU, Gauge cluster, Pedals, Shift linkage, shift knob/controls. Perhaps more. If you won't be performing the labor yourself, you're most deffinately better off selling the 5spd and buying an automatic.
Again, appologies if I cut too close to the bone; just wanted to make the pointed fact that drivers that learn on manual transmissions pay much more attention to the road, and the traffic around them.

I put my son in a manual because I didnt want him driving an automatic. I know when I was younger and had an auto, how much more I screwed round. I really didnt have to start paying attention until I got a manual.
You might get lucky and find an automatic NB in a junkyard with all the necessary parts.... That'll be the cheapest route. You're talking maybe 3-4 grand? And then maybe you could sell the old stock parts to recoup some of that.
Sorry for raggin' on ya, glad to see you know where I was comin' from.
