hey yall,

i have a 1999 new bug with a manual gearbox and it's making noises every once in a while. it only happens when i have the clutch in and braking, sometimes the ABS light comes on. it'll skip 2 weeks and then happen 3 times in one day. i mainly just drive to work, no big trips. it seems worse when it's wet outside and it's sort of a grinding noise.

any ideas?

Are you sure it is coming from the transmission? It is odd that the ABS would light up when you hear the noise.
What kind of noise are your hearing? Is it a clicking, whirring, or grinding kind of noise?

Being that it happens when you are braking and its wet outside, it could be a loose or bad connection to one of the ABS wheel sensors (thus the ABS light). Next time it does it release the brakes (if you can) and see if the noise changes.

Also is the brake pedal pushing back up at you when this happens? If it is, the ABS function is kicking in.

Most cars make a "grinding / vibrating" noise when the ABS system is active.
