The tint on my back window is pretty messed up thanks to my sister taking some decals off of it (LOOONG story). I need to remove it so I can have my buddy re tint it. But the defroster strips are easily dammaged. anyone have any ideas?

I wouldn't even dream of having someone other than a professional get that off and yes, the defroster strips do come off easily...

I had that happen . The guy said "no problem"!
I can get the tint off without damaging the
defroster.....he totally peeled it all off!
Everyone else in town wouldn't touch it...
wonder why? pissed me off.....

So I am bumping this, because I really want to redo the tint in the back window (Previous owner dinged up the tint and its got some small purple areas)... has anyone had success in removing the tint without damaging anything (not that I really need a defroster in my rear window here in Arizona, but I would rather not hurt my beetle)

So if someone has been successful in removing the old tint, please share!!!

]Breez, I’m in the same boat as you on the tint, I talked to a shop owner in Tempe a few weeks ago, and he said it could be done but it takes quite a while. I guess they use a liquid and soak and peel process. I've got to get over their next week, if it looks like they know what there doing I'll give it a try. If it works out I'll turn you on to them.
Whish me luck.[/SIZE]

How much money are we talking about to have it removed and retinted??? I REALLY want to have it done, but of course, done right.

I go to school in Tempe... I am totally interested in an update (Plus, I can go to the same place if you are happy with the work)... thank you

I had my whole car re-tinted a couple of years ago, and I had no problems. I didn't even realize there was any danger doing it...all I had heard was that it's a little harder because of the curve of the window. The tint shop didn't mention it either. Anyways, I had mine re-done since the crappy dealer's tint wasn't dark enough...I think mine ran about $180.

I have to remove my tints from my front side windows. It's illegal to have those window tinted! I've paid too many tix for it and now giving in. Anyone know how to remove tint? Would appreciate the tips!

Unfortunately, I can't help with the tint and defrost lines but I had removed tint before. For the windows, it's easy, rip it off. :) Then soak it with soap and water for about 10-20minutes. To keep it soaking, spray on a garbage bag and place it on the window. I found this link that explains it all:

http://www.tintprofessor.com.au/how-to-remove-tint.php

Like the link says, it's messy and labor intensive.

I have removed the tint off of the back window of 3 different cars, the most recent my 02 NB. I live in Florida so I do not know if the weather matters. It is very easy to do in the NB because you can do this with the hatch open standing up. You may want to put a cover over the trunk and the back seat. I just found a loose piece of tint or used a razor where there are no defroster lines and a bubble. Then just peel the entire window. The window is then really sticky and hazy. Spray Windex (Original with Ammonia) on the entire window. Ammoonia will immediately break down the adhesive. Spray it very heavily until it is dripping and running all over the place. Then use one of the sponges with the sponge on one side and a rough side (Scotch Brite I think is what I used). Make sure the package says no scratch. I got these at WalMart where the dish washing detergent is kept. Just keep scrubbing and spraying with Windex. It will take several sponges and lots of paper towels. Keep cleaning the window until it is crystal clear. It is really no harder than hand waxing the car. I removed all the tint on the car in about 2 hours. If you make sure to use a no scratch pad, the defroster will be fine. On the other windows you can use a razor blade instead of the scrubbing pad. The tint shop will charge you a lot of money to do this.

My dealership removed my old tint and did new back window tint (with a lifetime guarentee) for 47.99 :) I sure dont know how the defroster lines did, and probally will never know, since I live in Arizona... but I ended up going darker with the tint... and I am THRILLED I did!

I'm not so sure how well or long window defroster lines last being covered up with tint anyways, you would think turning them on would either make the tint bubble or melt where the wires get hot or cause the wires to burn in half by not allowing all the heat to dissapate fast enough.:o

I've had my tint on for 3 years now and love it! I was traveling through Iowa earlier this week and a friggin trooper gave me a $69.00 ticket. It read at "17" on his meter. The guy that put it on said it was legal,The trooper said it is leagal....but when added to a factory tinted window like ours....it goes illeagle.

Its after you remove the tint and re tint it, that you CAN have a problem, if they rip it off to fast/hard.

Honestly, I love mine redone! I really really  it, but I have NO CLUE if the defrost works now... because I dont ever use it. <--- lives in the desert

My dealership was 50 bucks to remove the old, replace it was lifetime guarentee new (and darker) tint.

I would have NEVER thought to get a quote at the dealership, but when I was there for service I mentioned that my back window tint was purple-ing and that there were holes... they asked if they had done the original tint, and since I bought it used, we didnt know. So it was 50 bucks, and would have been free if they had tinted the beetle the first time:D

I was in shock!

And let me tell you, it looks AWESOME. I wish I would have gone even another shade darker!
