What is the PZEV Engine ? I am looking at KBB and I see the 2006 2.5L in the following configurations:

2-door 2.5 Convertible Automatic 5 Cyl, PZEV 2.5 L, 150 HP FWD [City 23 Hwy 32]
2-door 2.5 Convertible Automatic 5 Cyl, 2.5 L 150 HP FWD [City 22 Hwy 30]

PZEV ??? The VW.com web site does not mention this difference for neither the Sedan or the Convertible. But the difference in mileage seems significant.

Convertibles have more drag, especially with the top down. Auto or manual, a convertible gets lesser mileage by 1-5MPG merly by design and weight, last I was told it's 250lbs heavier than the hardtop. PZEV is the 2.5L inline 5-cyl engine. It's not like any other engine offered in the beetle before; it's the same as in the new Jetta V.

I do not understand tough, I thought the 2006 NB came in 2 flavors of engines, the 2.5L and the TDI. Now instead it looks like there are three engines. The TDI, the 2.5L and the 2.5L PZEV.
What is the difference between the 2.5L and the 2.5L PZEV is still unclear.

Mystery solved my friends:

“PZEV”
Glossary

Definition: Partial Zero Emission Vehicle. A PZEV-rated vehicle is 90% cleaner than the average new car and also has near-zero evaporative emissions. The hybrid must also have a 15 year/150,000 mile warranty on the emission control systems.

SMGHow can you have zero emissions? what is it a hybrid or something? diesel/electric?

Look up the word 'partial' in the dictionary.

So the mileage are really deciving. Probably you get the same deciving from a VW PZEV and VW non-PZEV engine, but because on goverment testing the mileage is measured by measuring emissions you end up with the different numbers on the sticker.

PZEV is the only engine you can get in NY california and Massachsetts. Us New Yawkas cant buy a TDI new. They dont sell em here. The only option we have is PZEV 2.5.
