Anyone know of the best way to secure a bike to the NBC? I will need to know by the time my car arrives!
Thanks!

I think you are going to have to go the trailer hitch attachment route. Both Yakima and Thule make 2-bike or 4-bike racks that lock the bikes to the rack and the rack to the hitch. They have different rack models for different vehicle model applications. Check their online sites. We are very happy with our Yakima...

Classic Carriers also offers a bike rack attachment for their luggage rack.

The luggage rack mounts nicely to the NBC trunk... but I have not tried the bike rack accessory. Of course, you'd be looking at $500 to get into the whole set-up, before all is said and done. Going the hitch route would probably be cheaper.
Although, you can get other accessories for the luggage rack (ski holder, snowboard holder, etc)... making the system more versatile.
I didn't want to get a hitch because I would definitely bottom out at the bottom of our steep driveway.

Thanks for the different ideas! How much "typically" should a trailer hitch assemby cost - soup to nuts?

I have a Saris "Bones" 2-bike rack that fit just fine on the NBC's trunk. I could even raise & lower the top. It's very adjustable, easy to use and secure. Costs $100-$120, depending where you get it.
Here's one place that sells it. (http://www.pricepoint.com/detail/11594-255_SARB22-2-Accessories-38-Racks/Saris-Bones-Car-Rack---2-Bike.htm)

Awesome! And the bike didn't get too close to the car? I don't want my bicycle scratching up the paint.

I have the Saris Bones rack as well works on several vehicles.. I wrapped the metal strap ends with a bit of electrical tape.
They a bit of rubberized coating just not quite enough for my taste.

mine's the one in the pix on that trail hitch link.
the bike is far enough away. and i have a small bungee to hold the front wheel to the bike frame, otherwise it'd rub against the bumper.
the one hassle, you can't open your trunk the whole way with it on. so make sure you bike shoes and helmet are in your back seat first :D

Nope, the bike was plenty far enough away from the car. I use the excess webbing straps to secure the front wheel so it won't steer, and the rear so it won't spin. The frame of the bike rack itself prevents the pedals from turning.

I have the Bird Automotive bike rack, www.birdautomotive.com and love it. Still have access to the trunk even with the bike on, and it easily holds my small frame woman's hybrid bike. With the rack stored in the trunk, there is plenty of room for my hiking stuff or groceries. I highly recommend it.
:)
I use a regular BELL 2-bike rack that I picked up at Walmart. It fits and works perfectly on my 2005 convertible - top up or down, and transports 2 beach cruisers with any damaged to the car.

I checked out the Bird Automotive Rack, and it looks a little flimsy. Is it strong and sturdy? I would hope so for that price!
