So I ordered 3 oil filters from Auburn VW in Washington.

Today I received 3 paper like filter elements and a black o-ring with each one.

I haven't checked yet, but has anyone changed their oil themselves yet? Is this the right part??? If so I am guessing the oil filter housing is permanent and you just change out the paper filter element.

You got the right stuff. Keep in mind that channel locks CAN take the top off the oil canister to put the filter in, but it's totally plastic and it can misthread easily and break. This is bad cause a lose/broken oil filter cap = lost oil and oil pressure = low oil light = seized engine.

There is a tool that VW sells to undo it; my personal mechanic said taking your time with channel locks is the only way to do it right now since the part is back ordered... he said dealers in my area were advised to stock up on caps, if the old one broke while changing the filter element, put ion a new cap (but didn't say to or not to charge cap cost to the customer... knowing their practices it'll be a $110 oil change).

If it's the same cap as a TDI filter, you can use a normap end-style cap that attaches to a ratchet to loosen the filter cover.

Your local hardware store stocks the tool to remove the filter caps. I can't remember the size, but count the "sides" of the filter cap (14 I think) and its a smaller diameter 76 mm?. I just asked if I could take a few out to my car to check to make sure it fit correctly. I'll check to see which size it is.

$ 2.99 is what I paid.
