Baldy found this 1971 Super Beetle last week at a local junkyard and scooped it up for $300. He is going to start restoring it for my son. Mind you, my son is only 10 now, so they have 6 years to finish! lol

tell your son I am very very jealous. When I was 13 I wanted my dad to get a junker 70s beetle and have it be out project car. Dad didn't have time, nor believed in the "tin can death traps" ... now he drives my 73 every single day to work, and he loves these cars like I do! Alls well that ends well!
But.. take your time. It's a VERY simple car to work on, and be sure to do something fun and custom to it! Have fun and I can't wait to see more pics of it as it comes along! Does it run right now or does it have unknown problems preventing it from starting?

Im jealous too!!
That's so awesome Aura! Get em hooked early! Thats the way to go. ;) And I'm sure he'll be learning while your hubby restores which is also very cool. They're going to have lots of nice memories from the experience! I hung out more with my dad than I did with my mom when I was growing up and I was witness to many an air cooled resto. Mind you I didnt really learn anything because I wasnt allowed to "get in the way" I guess at the time my dad didnt realize I was as interested as I was. I think he thought I was just trying to be a nudge. I dont blame him. How many little girls really give a crap about restoring old cars? :ha:
So it looks like there are fun times (and probably a couple of frustrating times but thats a given when doing stuff like this)ahead for your hubby and your son! Theyre going to have so much fun and Im majorly jealous :D

Wow! More pics! And you know, even at that stage, if you wash/clay bar/wax, you will be inspired to do more. I bought a '73 Bug once for $50 and turned it into a show car.

My son started begging us for a Karmann Ghia when he was about 13. He would read the classifieds every morning and report on the KGs. So after he learned to drive, I found him one and he was in heaven. He learned to do routine maintenance, as well as a lot of stuff that goes with a 30+ yr old car. And he learned to do body work after he backed his mom's car into the Ghia.
He wrecked it, but he still pines for it and he still helps his friends when they have minor car probs. It was definitely worthwhile.

Thanks you guys! I'm gonna let my son Yul read all these posts when he gets home from school today! :D He's so excited to be starting this project with dad and my daughter Weezer is going to be helping as much as possible too. It's funny too because my son already has the whole car sketched out with what he wants it to look like when their done...even down the wheels he wants! LOL I thought that was pretty cute....
We had to have it towed here because there were no keys for it. But this weekend we are taking off the ignition cyllinder and having keys made. Hopefully it will at least start, but if not, they are going to do their best to get it going over the next 2 weekends :D
Amy I know what you mean about hangin' out with dad in the garage! I did the same thing working on old Ford trucks with my dad and I always remember what a great time we had. I got lucky because I came 6 years before my brother and when he was old enough to help dad with project trucks, he wasn't interested in anything else but sports. Good for me! :D I kept my rightful place in the garage! LOL
So I guess that we are raising them up right! Little v-dubbers all the way! LOL

That's awesome!
My stepdad and I brought a 1983 Rabbit GTi back from the dead when I was about 14 (1998). We spent many hundreds of hours on that car, leaving no detail spared. I may not have the car anymore, but my stepdad and I got really close because of it.
So I say let them run wild! :)

My son is jazzed to be reading all your posts! :) The boys worked on it today and found that it might be the original paint. They were VERY EXCITED!! They cleaned it up some more and changed the wheels out to hubby's old Ghia wheels/rims and it looks so much better! But my son informed me and hubby that he's eventually got to have Porsche wheels for BUGHOLE, so we told him to get a job! LOL

I so want to be in this family.
Nobody bought me a Bug when i was 10. I'm a bit jealous.
I wish i never junked my 72. :( Had i known then what i know now about them i would still have it today. Aside from the color and the front windows, and the fact you still have running boards, it looks identical to what i had. I'll have to buy a OG Bug someday. I see no alternative.

What you are saying, so it sounds to me, is that the 'triangle' windows on the front doors are gone.
Am I right? Then, that means at some time, someone replaced them with one piece windows. Which is a shame, since those triangle's let in a great bit of breeze, and when you don't have A/C, you need all the air cooling you can get.

Thanks Ivy! :) I'm hoping that since he's going to be part of the restoration process that he won't drive like a typical teenager.....does that make sense? What I mean is, maybe he will appreciate it more and take good care of it ;)

I'm hoping that since he's going to be part of the restoration process that he won't drive like a typical teenager.
You can be assured that he will drive like a teenager, even if he's put a lot of sweat and time into it. It's a fact of life: teens don't have the experience or the ability to think far enough ahead to keep themselves out of problems.
If you make him wait until he's 17 or 18 to drive, it will be better. Our insurance agent told us that the accident rate among kids who start driving at 15 (learner's permit) is almost 100% in the first year. It goes down slowly every year, but there's a reason why males under 25 have the highest insurance rates.
The good news is that body damage is much easier to fix on a Beetle than a Ghia. That's what totalled G's Ghia. If we could have found a front clip, it would have been way more expensive than the car was worth, even with a new engine and tranny, pans and interior.
Sigh. I miss that car....

Wow! Body looks to be in great shape considering. $300 is a friggin steal. The engine is probably toast but the body is what really matters most. Any bondo on the rear quarter panels? How are the floor pans?
I'm old school so I'm partial to a flat windshield. IMO when VW switched to the curved windshield is when the quality started to go south. The same goes for when they switched from small to large taillights.
I'm quite envious of your find. If I lived nearby you'd need a court order to keep me away from the rebuild project.
Any chance you can post a pictures of the interior?
JuggBug
05-17-2006, 04:52 PM
Thanks CC! Nope, no bondo on the rear quarter panels, but the floor pans are in need of some work. Luckily our neighbor is a welder, so he said he's going to hook it up for the young padwan. :D
I wish you did live closer! We are gonna need all the help we can get on this project! We have lots of friends helping but the boys get such great pleasure in taking Bughole apart piece by piece all by themselves, so go figure?! The front fenders came off last night and the bumpers were the night before.
I like the flat windshield too! It's cool lookin' There is some debate in this household about the window vents on the side windows though. We're pretty sure that someone replaced the window with a full window and got rid of the one with the side vent   My son Yul's ultimate goal is the german look, so we'll see what they decide.
I took loads of pics the other night and I will post them by the weekend! :)

No, not a monster, just a future obsessive, like all the rest of us! :screwy: :) It will be really good for him and your hubby, a real bonding experience and fun, too. It's all MY dad's fault I'm like I am now, first we kept repairing and maintaining his 67 'Stang, then he bought a junk Subaru, our idea was to make it electric (never finished, but what fun!). I was married and out of the house when he made his "Frankenstein" Jeepstang! Modded tall jeep 4x4 frame with stang engine and tranny! My little brother got to help with that one. What's so fun on those older Beetles is that you can actually work on them. It's all nuts, bolts, screws and clips. My favorite part of working on those beauties was to use the book "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive - A Manual of Step-by-step Procedures For The Complete Idiot". It really gave me confidence to start working on cars. It would be a GREAT buy for the junior grease-monkey so that he can follow along with the process...

Looks like a great project! I just sold my trusty ole' Volvo wagon 1990 240Dl with 332,000 miles on it and my 9 year old son was PISSED! He was looking forward to driving it when he turned 16. What a great thing for kids to work on. My 9 year old just enjoys kicking my butt at golf.
I miss my 73 super beetle (which was also yellow.. a little faded but still yellow). Love our NB (Yellow of course) but for some reason, my wife won't let me put a Grateful Dead sticker on the back window like my 73 had!
I think you better go down and get BUGHOLE plates for the project car if they are available.

I totally hate to be nit-picky, but are you sure that's a Super Beetle? I'm pretty sure that Super Beetles had a curved windshield and slats on the front apron under the front bumper making a 'grill' sort of. I could be wrong but that's what I thought...hmm...
The Macpherson struts up front is a dead give away. Some supers (early) had the flat glass. Later they were curved.

So are they about to drop the engine?
One thing that will really help out if they are is to put in a removable rear apron. The stock one can be used. Just drill out the spot welds that hold it on, and then use a chisel to take it the rest of the way off. This way the engine can be taken out next time without having to jack it up.

I have done a clutch, pressure plate and TOB in a 66 bug in under an hour, start to drive off. Just gotta get used to the car...
Aura, it is very gratifying seeing the torch being passed. I've had over 20 VW's, all but Oso were air-cooled. I still have a 70 bug that looks a lot like that one, just waiting for me to have the time/finances to put into it. At least my son (red_rock_beetle) has caught the "bug", and is working on his pair of 914's...
Got that alternator installed yet, son? :D

I never said it was hard, it's just a lot easier to grab a wrench and take the apron off than to jack the car up.

Everybody wants to dig in there and I have to say that Yul is very, very hands on about doing everything himself. He has spent the whole summer reading vdub restoration books.....:D

Hey Aura--
This is so cool! Three generations of dubbers! :)
We bought a '73 standard for my daughter when she turned 16. Those kids had the best time ever in that car! The guys at California Pacific/J Bugs were great to work with on parts etc. We completely redid the interior and our seat upholstery came from them-- it looked fantastic. The headliner, though, was a major PITA and I don't know if I'd try to do it myself again.
Best of luck with your OB! We need new progress pix!

Since the car's a super beetle. Another place for parts is TopLine Parts. They specialise in only Supers. They have alot of good tips on supers also. THe best advice that I can give is when it comes to the front end. Replace ALL the bushings with polyurethane bushings rather than rubber. Supers have a problem that you can read about on topline's website about "Super Shimmy" which is a problem that just about every super beetle suffers from at one time in it's life.

Yul informed me and BaldyLox last night that this is what he wants Bughole to end up looking like. I gotta keep that boy off Samba.com! :p
Yul has good taste. Must take after his Mother!
Great looking car to start with! Gee, original paint too. Neat!
Those Porsche rims in the picture remind me of all of the stuff I bought for a friend of mine when he was updating his '74 911 to '80's 911 SC spec (mirrors, turbo whale tale & polished 6's / 7's with the painted centers). Externally, it was a stunner when it was done. Although, I could've killed him when he sold it 8 months after it was finished.:(
I've always liked the Cal-look on an old Bug. Although "cool" doesn't necessarily mean "comfy" when it comes to the solid side glass.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!
And post more pics.

I'm getting ready to drop about $500+ to topline for a bunch of goodies for my 72 Super. I'm going to install a set of their front disc brakes, sport springs, urethane bushings for both the front and rear suspension, a strutt tower bar. My 72 is getting a little bit of a make over. I'm lowering the front a bout an inch just to clean things up a little, and give the car a more aggressive looking stance.

What a great day....We pulled the body off the pan and placed it on my neighbors flatbed truck. Next week we'll put it on saw horses on the side of our house. I will remove the tranny soon and begin to work on the pan. I am very excited and nervous about this project. More pics to follow.......:D
