Default Question about BUG stuff

I am always on the hunt for an older Beetle that needs a bit of TLC to get it road ready.

Here are my questions:

How much is it to replace a timing belt? Can the part be purchased somewhere and installed at home? How often does this need to be done?

Also, if it is a US vehicle that is in Canada, what needs to be done? Anything extra?

How does safetying a car work?

I found a girl selling a 2000 GLS 1.8T here in Hamilton, asking $2K. Exterior is in pretty good shape, but it needs to be towed to it's destination. She said the timing belt has snapped and may need other engine work done. Any idea how or what would be done, and the cost?

The fact that the timing belt snapped would worry me. I am not sure about VW motors or the 1.8t, but some ford motors are non-interference motors which means that when the timing belt snaps the motor won't be blown. If this is the case then a simple timing belt and timing adjustment would make that motor run like new if that is all that is wrong. I'll let more experienced guys chime in though

I hope this is the case because we would all like you to get a bug

Hmmm. Ya I have found a couple of bugs for around $2k that need a bit of work. I think I need to wait until my dad gets back from California. He needs to help me with this stuff. Lol. I can only imagine his face if he came home and saw I purchased another car. Eek. Haha.

I would not bother with this car as it will require lots of cash just to fix the cylinder head as the valves will be bent as this is an interfearence engine!! You would be better off waiting for something better...

Ok thanks. I appreciate the feedback. My brother said the same thing too. I'll keep looking.

Uhh how is that not worth 2k? I'd buy that myself if it was closer.

It looks great exterior wise, just a cracked lower grille (where the fogs are).

Other than that it looks awesome. Leather seats, sunroof, manual transmission with a turbo.

However, the girl said the timing belt snapped and that various other pieces needed to be fixed. She also said that the codes had to be read to figure out what else was wrong with it.

I think I wouldn't be as skeptical if it started and I didn't have to tow it home to figure out what's wrong with it.

Even if it needs a motor it's worth 2k. I'd offer $1700 or so for it and see what happens.
