2004 means there still should be some shred of warranty left on the car. Do NOT take this guy's advice if you have warranty because if the player is defective and you open it (there are seals on the back of the unit), you just cost yourself $500 (the retail cost of a new Monsoon CD player from the dealer; non-Monsoons are about $450). Of course, if there's over 50k on the car, then by all means proceed at your own risk (this trick does work, I've used it myself on my 2000 Jetta with the CD player), but if there's warranty left, just bring it in and let VW take care of it. That's what a warranty is put on cars for; so you don't have to deal with issues like this for the first 4 years or 50,000 miles.
In the future, please indicate if there is still warranty left on the car as this will allow us to make an accurate synopsis of the situation and tell you the best course of action.
