If you're beetle doesn't have the monsoon system then all the speakers are 6-1/2" speakers. As far as i know the a-pillar trim, where the tweeter is, is all one unit that has to be replaced if your tweeter goes out. Unless you can fab something up.

I'm not completely sure about this but i think the ones in the rear are 6-1/2" speakers in all cars, mine were but i DON'T have a monsoon system. you can put some 6x9s back there, there's plenty or room for them, but once again you'd have to cut into the metal plate that normally holds the 6-1/2" speaker. With all car audio products, almost anything can go where you want, it just depends on how much work/money you want to spend to get it there.

Funny thing I discovered...in the Monsoon, there is no Tweeter in the A Pillar (at least not on my wife's '01.) The tweeters are mounted with the speakers in the dash. The speaker grills on the A-Pillars are simply to cover up the holes there...I've been thinking about something else to do there...and no, she does not need gauge pods...

Yup, if you have monsoon, there are 2 speakers under each grill in the dash and the speakers are oversized 6 1/2's. (6 3/4")

I never thought about cutting into the sheet metal to put a 6x9 in the rear factory location. Altho i would have to comment that the sound would be trapped inside the panel because of hte factory grill in hte panel, so you'd have to cut that too get get the best of a 6x9 in the rear panel.

You could also cut 6x9's into the rear parcel tray, but you'd have to disconnect them every timew you take the shelf off, and imho, it looks really cheesy.

That also makes them easier to steal, if you can get them behind trim panels that makes a great theft deterent in most cases.

I think it's pointless to change rear speakers as fronts give you the most performance anyway. For best sound quality you should install either 2 or 3 way component system and it should be killer. I saw one 3 way kit that had exact same sizes as stock speakers (6.5", 3.5 or 4", and 1"). However, modifications still had to be made as the depth varies.

I don't remember exactly who, but somebody installed them in their Beetle.

The 3-way I was talking about is JL Audio. Here is the link: http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_c...hp?comp_id=121

mmmm, JL xr's hotness.

Actually, my rears add alot to the soundstaging in my car. But then again, my front woofers dont do much midrange at all. And well, i dont have mid's in my dash cuz i didnt have monsoon.

I like the base sound of the Monsoon, myself, but hell, I'm happy with the sound in my non-monsoon car...

I replaced the door speakers in my wife's NB with some Pyle component (ie. cheap) mid bass speakers. The sound is MUCH imporved, not to mention she kept blowing her original ones...she likes her bass.

Now that I think about it, I still have the tweeters from that set up...might put them in and see how they sound in my car.

In cars that don't have the monsoon system, the rears are where a lot of your sound comes from. When i first got my bug i played around with the balance on the factory radio and noticed that if you don't have them set at the middle then you loose a lot of your clarity. The factory speakers were placed in the best places so that you get an even sound throught the cabin. Usually a good thing to do when you're seeting up a sound system, doesn't matter what it is, is to use the rears for more bass sounds and use the fronts for highs. Since bass can pass through most anything it's alright for them to be back there, highs won't pass through a lot so you need them directed at you.

Thanks for good info and for correcting me

I'm planning on doing those JLs sometime in my life, haha!

First need to finish OEM HID install as well as oil pressure sender, and then fix exhaust mount. After that, I may have enough money left...

some of the problems are rear speakers working quiet. drivers door is working completely different from other doors, (the remote doesnt work on drivers door, and window switch on drivers door dont control the passenger window, and when closing the door and holding, it only closes the drivers window..... MANY problems.... oh well.
