Default Rear Speaker Removal Help

I recently purchased a 2001 Beetle and it seems that my right rear speaker is not working... Reading through the threads here I am assuming that perhaps the speaker is blown and I am thinking about doing the Crutchfield thing and ordering replacement rear speakers. However, when I took a quick look at the rear speaker grills, I don't see an easy way to get to the speakers and do not want to pry the plastic to far and break something. Do any of you have any removal instructions for the rear speakers? Thanks in advance for any help!

The whole panel has to come off...the grill is plasti-welded in. There is a clip on the door sil, you have to pull that one out first. Then the rest of the panel is held in with the typical type of clips, you pull straight out. Then you have to pull up to get the top to release. It is harder to get it back in than off, to be honest.

Thanks GatorBeetle. Do you think my issue is the speaker and not a wiring issue? Have you replaced your rear speakers? I'm thinking about a set from Crutchfield.com (Kenwood KFC-1680ie) as I don't want to spend too much on them. Thanks again.

No, I haven't replaced rear speakers. I switched all my door panels out for a different color. If there is no sound, it has to be more than a blown speaker, in my opinion. My wife blew her door speakers a few times, and there was always sound, it just sucked. I have replaced door speakers, but not rears.

OK, I replaced the rear speakers today and found out that the new right rear speaker still did not work. I cut a file folder hanger in half and angled the ends then filed them down to use as a "removal tool" for the radio unit and pulled it out to find that the wiring harness clip was not securely inserted into the rear of the radio. So, everything is working now and the rear speakers sound great, however I have some issues / questions:

1. Safe mode - This flashed up on the unit (I did disconnect the battery before pulling out the unit) and I found the code in the spare tire compartment (thanks again NewBeetle.org forums) however I did not enter the code, the radio just began working??? Does this mean I am okay -or- do I need to somehow enter the code? The FM stereo sounds almost like mono, however the CD player (6 disk box in hatch) sounds really nice! So, is my radio in safe mode or not? Do I need to worry about it or not? Please advise.

2. There is a very small pin type hole with a red light that seems to be blinking on the upper right hand side of the radio face plate. What is this? Do I need to be concerned?

3. I noticed that after doing all of this my electric windows will go down all the way with one "push" of the button, however will not go up with one "push" in the upwards direction like it used to do? Any idea on this? Does something need to be programmed in order for this feature to work? Thanks!
