Default Head Unit Whine

RPM whine, that is.

Joe swapped my Kenwood Excelon MP3 head unit from Cosmo to Hermione. The HU is 2 years old. Now it whines like mad!

First he tried regrounding the HU and the antenna. That worked for about 1/2 day then the whine came back stronger than ever. Plus he changed out the RCAs so those are brand new. Another problem started happening...while listening to FM stations, the static increases as speed increases. Stations that usually come in strong and clear become unlistenable.

Joe got a couple of noice filters and hooked them onto my Kenwood amp (also a transplant from our Passat). That worked briefly but the whine came back yesterday while listening to my iPod (connects directly into the aux input via a dash jack).

I'm to the point of yanking the sucker out and getting a whole new HU and possibly an amp.

Thoughts? Input? I think Joe's thought of everything (he's an electronics tech and has done almost every single stereo install over the past 14 years).

Sounds like a bad ground . Very doubyful it is the Kenwood H/u . Possibly your amplifiers power wire is pickong up alternator whine . Do you lose voltage when the whine begins ?
Try rerouting the power wire and use a good quality wire like Stinger or Hooker brand which has a good quality shield.

Well...when the whine came back, I was accused of taking a left turn too hard. My filters and sub came unplugged! Once Joe fixed that the whine disappeared.

I don't believe I lost voltage. *insert dumb question* How would I know if I did?
