cant get origenal stero out - even with proper keys !!!

I bought another origenal stereo off ebay, as the one in the car has a faulty volume knob.

even putting the keys into the stereo from ebay, it seems that the keys wont even work on that, unless you push the security tabs in a little, to ensure that the keys slide the tabs sideways as they should.

anyone got a fix for this, or a way to remove the origenal stereo without these useless keys.

by the way the keys I have are genuine VW ones.

I have heard of people making their own keys and having them work properly. I, on the other hand, bought mine from the dealership. Yeah, I had a bit of a problem getting them to work. I think one kept slipping out, and I might have bent one. It's been a while since I had to use them, but they did eventually work! I remember having to rock the radio back and forth to get it out, and that it was a pretty tight fit.

Those AREN'T the proper keys.
I think those are for the Jetta or something like that...they are VW, just not New Beetle.

Pic of the radio removal keys...I think the item # is 1C0-051-530

Oh yeah, that too. The reason I didn't mention that was the final comment in the first post. I assumed that the posted picture was not meant to show the actual keys.

when i had to get my deck out, I tried to make my own keys out of saw-za blades, that almost worked, but I ended up taking it to the dealer who did it for free.

I purchased a set of new beetle radio removal keys from eBay and want to make sure I use them proper. I can't tell from this picture how they work. Does the tooth on each key (the notch at the pointed end) point towards the inside of the radio when inserting into the slits? Once in, just pull and the radio comes out?

Any advice on proper use of the keys would be great!

Thanks

tj

I found this elsewhere on the net so I think I got my own answer. Will see if this works.

tj

"You push these into the slots with the pointy side toward the outside of the head unit. This will force the release clips inward and allow you to slide the unit out. Make sure you have the code before disconnecting power."

So I pushed the keys in (the right ones, with the pointed end) but I can't pull the radio out. How do you grab onto the radio to pull it out??? The keys slide back out.

thanks,

Sid

I kind of had to fish around with the keys and after they caught I had to grab the radio by the edges. It was held in pretty tight and I had to fight it a bit, maybe with some rocking back and forth. But the keys at least got the removal started for me.

Yeah - the keys should latch into it if they hit the releases..you might have to push to the outside on each side while pulling out on the keys...the keys themselves are the removal tool, like I said - once they release the latch they should bite onto a piece of metal and allow you to pull the unit out.

I just used 2 jig saw blades, stuck the back of them into the slots, they fit perfect and my radio slid right out.
