Hi Everyone,
Here's the deal. I have to replace the door and rear speakers in my Y2K Beetle, non-monsoon. I've done all the research I can do on both here, the old forums, and Vortex. But there seems to be no answer to my questions. So, I'm posting. First question is the depth in the door. Everyone says "be careful of the depth of the door speaker so not to block the window". I have yet to see the info posted anywhere and while Crutchfield says certain 1 7/8, 1 13/16, 1 15/16, etc. speakers will fit, I don't want to order and then have a problem. From what I have found, I don't really need to concern myself with the rear speaker depth, but please correct me if I'm wrong. So, does anyone know the maximum depth in the door? Second, I've seen in a few posts that the doors are for bass, but I also read that the crossover is part of the actual OEM speaker. If that is true, then replacing the door speaker (and the rear for that matter) with aftermarket means that I'm getting all freq's delivered to the speaker(s). Is that the case or is there crossover functionality somewhere else in the system (non-monsoon)? I'm thinking of the 6.5 Infinity's. I would buy a component set for the front door to eliminate the tweeter in that location if that will make a better sound, but if it doesn't matter, I would buy 2-ways for all locations. Suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance. |

Thanks for the offer to help...Virginia might be a tad too far away. And thanks for the info...I decided to take on the project today and it went ok. My worst outcome is the many papercuts on my hands from working with the dynomat...I'm really not liking the stuff right now.
In any case, I ended up with some Pioneer 2-ways. I reused both the foam backing around the existing speakers (to get a good seal aroud the mount) and the rubber sealing ring (to get a good seal with the cover). I didn't attempt anything with the tweeter in the A-Pillar. Finally, I tried to seal everything with dynomat...did I mention I hate this stuff. The sound is much better. The speaker depth I went with was 1 7/8 in the door. At both the door location and the rear, the speaker mounted flush to the panel...that allowed the rubber sealing ring to stick out far enough to seal with the cover. Hope that helps someone. |
