Default what speakers should I get?

Okay, I just had the OEM cassette deck replaced with a Pioneer CD head unit and it is much more powerful and has waaaaaaaaaay better tone quality. However, the OEM speakers tend to distort with the FM tuner volume turned up appreciably. Any suggestions for replacement speaker that would better handle the increased wattage that the head unit puts out?

Well, i'll just say it, for most people who just want a better speaker. I'd reccomend the Pioneer speakers witht he blue woofer cones. They definately have the best bang for the buck while sounding really good without crying for an external amp.

If you replace your speakers and dont find a way to put the rubber baffle that's in between your speakers and door/rear panels, you will lose alot of your bass.

But after you add new speakers, your gonna wanna add a sub anyway.

Just about anything you can find will be better than the OEM ones, especially if you didn't have the monsoon system. When it comes to speakers you get what you pay for.

We've been an Infinity family since our 1994 Honda Civic. Infinity Kappa 6.5s fit nicely in the NB. It's cool because the stock built-in grills hide the fancypants speakers. Research Crutchfield.com first, get the part number/part name, and then shop eBay for some killer deals.

I also have the Infinity Basslink sub. It has a built-in amp and is easy to take out if you need the room. This is the third vehicle it's been in (2002 Passat and my 2004 NB GL...now in my 2003 Turbo S).

I'd like to reiterate that my referral was on the intent that you didn't want to spend that much and wanted to get decent sound.

I agree with kittenpoker and vdubbugman that infinity and alpine spekaers are really good and are better than pioneer, but they also like power (a.k.a. happier with external amps)

If your intent is on getting a full blown radio system, it all depends what your budget is.

Budget is not that high, Toad, so I'll probably go for the Pioneer. (I've always had a thing for the Pioneer brand, anyway..., but I appreciate the suggestions, just in case....)

Default "How to" for replacing speakers?

Are there any "how to" threads on this site for how to change out the speakers, espec. the rear? Do you just "pop off" the covers? Hey, I'm somewhat "technically challenged."

the doors and rears are very easy.

the doors have 3 torx scres along the bottom and 2 phillips screws under the pull handle cover. and then it just just held on iwth clips which pop off, starting at the bottom, and then pull up on the top to get the top out of hte ridge in the door. and then just unplug everything.

the rear panels come off in the same fashion, except there are no screws, just pop off starting at the bottom. It's a bit tricky and requires some painful slight bending around the bottom seat belt bar and door rocker panel, but other than that, it's just unclips and then pops up. to put it back on the hardest part is getting the top part of the rear panel back in it's clips. if they came off with the panel, you'll need to put it back on the body so the opening on the clip is facing up.

oh yeah, the door woofers are rivited on, and the reares are screwed on. Why? i dont know.

So what if you do have the monsoon system? I have an '01 beetle with the monsoon system. I replaced the HU with a pioneer and now the door speakers cannot handle it. Also my dash speaker on the drivers side does not work. How do i remove the speaker grill to check it out and has anyone else had this problem or have a resolution for it.

The dash speaker that does work and the rear speakers sound just fine. Should i just replace the door speakers and call it good? I do plan on running a 12" sub in the back but haven't installed it yet. Any help would be appreciated.

If you have monsoon, there are actually 2 speakers in the dash, and no tweeter in the pillar.

To get to the dash speakers, you remove the center part of hte dash closest to the windhsield by pushing down a little and pushing it toward hte windsheild. there will be 3 torx screws underneat that along the edge of the windsheld side, after you remove those, the front dash panels will lift out with clips all along the edges. Unplug the speakers and theyre out.

I've never actually done that with a monsoon bug, So i dont really know how to get the speakers off the panels once you get them out.

well if you are going to do them you may as well do all for door speakers so they sound the same. i found that 100 a pair was not that bad but yea i have come hot hate pioneer, panosonic, and sony, the speakers you will buy will suck *** for base so dont bother with wanting base....but that is JMO
