You've come to the right forum. Since this subject has been discussed quite a lot, the "Search" button is your new best friend.
From an installation standpoint there is little difference between XM & Sirius so be sure to search on both keywords. Also, a search on "75X" would be helpful - it's an alternate power source instead of the cigarette lighter power supply. |

I have XM installed in our minivan but not our Beetle yet and will be doing an install for Christmas for my wife.
Check out xmfan.com as that site has a ton of install pictures, suggestions, etc. I installed a whole XM hookup in my Volvo than switched the system into my Windstar for under $50.00. That included the XM receiver (Roady II) and also the direct FM Modulator connect. Made a custom home made installation bracket out of an old license plate. Good luck. Ed

Blitzsafe makes two adaptors specifically for the XM Commander and VW. One which plugs in to your factory CD Changer cable in the trunk and the other which plugs directly into your factory head unit. I went with the one in the trunk, it was all plug and play and the adaptor also uses power from the radio so you don't need to worry about running a power tap. Another nice feature is you can turn the XM Commander off/on with your factory head unit. Also another plus with the Blitzsafe is the sound quality, it's as good as you can get since it's direct connection. After experiementing with some antenna mounting locations, I came to the conclusion that it works just fine on the dash, I have it mounted right on top of the center cover with double-edge tape at the very edge, no drilling or mods required. Signal strength is excellent, I have 3 full bars with no dropouts, of course this may vary by your location (# of ground repeaters). I originally looked into using the OEM NBC or Hardtop Sat. antenna, but after pricing the units I determined it wasn't too cost effective nor did I want to remove my roof antenna in the case of the hardtop. |

For the Roady 2 there are two available from P.I.E. that should work for your application, it's very similar to Blitzsafe and uses power from your headunit and installs in your trunk if you have the factory CD changer or cable in that location. http://enfigcarstereo.com/shopsite_s...IE_XM6_VW.html If you don't have the cable in the trunk, you can use the other one XM6-VWR which installs behind your head unit (you have to remove the radio to plug it in). http://enfigcarstereo.com/shopsite_s...E_XM6_VWR.html I would contact Enfig directly and ask them to be sure. Make sure you verify the car you have year, what radio and etc. |

http://enfigcarstereo.com/shopsite_s...e/html/X3.html Only thing is I don't know if the P.I.E or Blitzsafe adaptor will function with it inline or not, if you have a factory CD changer I doubt it since there are no RCA plugs. It's a more expensive option in the end. This is another one, but it's only good for say an iPod and XM, no CD changer. http://www.usaspec.com/aux2.html Like I said, I would contact Enfig directly to find your best solution. Good luck.... |

I have XM in my bug. I put the unit in the glovebox and ran the wires up to the radio. You loose the storage but It was the best place I could think of. Seems to work pretty well. I should also add that I do not have the stock radio. Best of luck! I ran the antenna wiring from the back of the glovebox around and under the dash and mounted it in the middle of the dashboard. Looks pretty clean. I can post pictures in need be.

On a lot of the aftermarket XM kits that have the cig lighter plug, you can't hard-wire them, since the plug drops the voltage down from your 12v to, I believe IIRC, 5v. If you hard-wire it to your fuse box bypassing the plug, you'll fry your XM receiver. Please don't ask me how I know this with such certainty...
You can always hard-wire a female cig lighter plug to a switched fuse and then plug your kit into this and hide everything under the dash somewhere (not so much that you can't find it when you need to change a fuse). Then program your kit to turn on automatically when power comes on (check your owner's manual for the kit) so you don't have to worry about turning it on every time or, more importantly, turning the thing off when you turn off the car. Not a very elegant solution, but it would work... ![]() |
