Default Alpine deck is impossible to pull out

I recently purchased an '01 that came with an aftermarket alpine deck cleanly installed with the trim-ring type face plate. I can't seem to be able to pull out the deck no matter how hard I try... does anyone know if it could be screwed in, or is there something i need to do to pull it out (I've taken the face plate off and also taken the trim-ring before attempting to pull it out).

The deck is an Alpine 9856.. I'm pulling it out so I can connect the alpine ipod cable to it.

A good installer will teather the deck to the car making it very hard to revove if trying to be stolen. You may be incountering this type of installation. I had a deck installed once and it was attempted to be stolen, but the theives never got it out because it was secured with a metal strap to the back of the dash. I thought it was great that it wasn't taken but I have no idea how the installers can do it. It was a tight fit. Good luck.

try removing the 'pod '"the center piece of the dash "that encases the radio it is probably screwed to the cage assembly in the pod itself

Yup, I installed my Alpine radio few months ago, you will want to remove the whole upper center piece.

Thanks for the heads up guys. I think I'm going to try with the alpine stereo removal keys, and if that doesn't work.. I'll hit Cartoys in Seattle and see if they will do the ipod cable install.

If the mounting kit is anything like I used for my Alpine, you need to pop off the ring that surround the radio, you will then see 2 screws, unscrew these. I believe at this point you can pull the radio out with out taking off the center console piece. Its been awhile since I did my install so not sure on the center piece.

It might be the screws...but I know my HU is a TIGHT fit...I had to take the center pod out just to get it IN in the first place.

It's fun...really, dismantling the innards of your ride...

if it's a 981X model there's no keys, but instead you'll see at the side edges of the head unit, 2 little slider clips. Just use a tiny screw driver and push each one to the middle of the bracket and then pull the head unit out.
