i had this problem, called the vw dealership and just fixed it today.

1. make sure car is off
2. turn key to 'on' and have radio on
3. wait for an hour and it will be cleared out

no you dont have to turn it all the way to the 'on' position, just to turn the accesory electronics on. according to both tha manual and dealership its the only way. dont worry i did it 4 times yesterday with no problem.

I know this is an old thread, but I just got my NB today and my radio is stuck in safe as in the 1000 wont show up. So I am following these instructions hoping it works. I turned the key one click (2 clicks makes all the dash lights come on) is this right? Thanks in advance

You only have to leave the key in the ignition for an hour it can be in the off position so not to run anything else the radio must be on though. It will stay on as long as the key is in the ignition.

I too have a safe mode problem. I got the code from my dealer and it still dosnt work? I dont know what to do now?
