There are a few alternatives. The iTrip (and other products like it) use radio signals to transmit your music to your car stereo. Or you could go all out and get a new stereo all together. Some, like Alpine, offer models that will connect right to your iPod. Just depends on how much you want to spend.

Get a good quality FM transmitter. I have one for my ANTI-iPod
and it works a treat. I got it off eBay. It plugs into the earphone jack on the mp3 player, and into the cigarette lighter in the car. Then you just tune into the transmitter's frequency on your FM radio. Very simple. Just avoid the cheapest kind of FM transmitter, that only has 1 or 3 frequencies available. Mine has 7.

I have a nice Sony Tape Deck Adapter thing that I used in my mom's car before I got my Beetle (yeah, I'm a new driver). It works absolutely fine in her car with decent sound quality, but my Beetle doesn't like it. It always tries to rewind the tape even though there's nothing to rewind.
I tried an FM transmitter once before getting my own car and wasn't having such good luck with it. I'm now on the hunt for an inexpensive, nice looking CD player for my car that is iPod capable. |

I bought the same product and quickly took it back! It was the worst and you're right about the noise it makes. Horrible! The only thing I liked about it was that it would pause my iPod for me and start it when I started my car. Because of that feature, I tried to give it a chance, but I couldn't take the noise!
I just have a little tape deck adapter from Target that plugs into the headphone jack. No yucky noise... a little tape player noise, but nothing that I can't tune out. The only FM transmitter I found that works in a large city area is the one that's about $90 at Best Buy. I forget what it's called... but I'll try to find a photo. The others just pick up radio signals and the sound quality is awful. (This one:
