Default 98 Factory radio -some buttons don't work

have a 98 NB with fatory radio and CD changer in trunk. Recently several buttons have stopped responding to touch. First it was the up function of the up/down button, then the down function of same. Today The CD button refuses to respond- I can get tape/am/fm/ but cd does nothing. Contemplating removing front plate to have a look (after I'm sure I have the radio code card), but not sure what I'll encounter doing this. any helpful tips on opening up radio or repairing non-resposive buttons?

I had the same trouble with my 98, the buttons started to give....I tried messing with it and ended up with buttons all over the place. I had a difficult time with it and just gave up, surprisingly my dad bought me a new radio and tint for my car which was awesome, but I was without my radio for quite some time very lame. Now only one of my speakers work in my car so hopefully soon, I have a new set up in my car so I can finally listen to my music properly.

I had that happen to me too. Turns out the one of the tabs that holds the face(I guess you can call it that) of the stereo was cracked. What I ended up doing is taking it apart and putting a piece of folded paper in between the face part of the stereo and the stereo. Kinda hard to explain, if I find my make shift stereo removal key I'll take pics.

It's not that hard to take the front piece of the stereo off, there's 2 screws that hold that on. If you don't have your readio code card, you can always look for a factory tag sticker thingy in the area where the spare tire is. The stereo code should be on that tag.

More than likely, the little tiny pins that sit behind the buttons are brooken. I had this same problem and replaced my unit with another factory unit. I took off the face plate and all these little pieces of plastic pins fell out. Its too costly to repair....just replace your head unit.

Anyway,I just had my factory radio replaced in my 2000 NB. I don't know if it's the same type you have (sounds like it is - maybe one of the technical .org gurus can answer that), but it's in great working order although the up, down and number 1 buttons have some 'wear' on them. I have not use for it that I can see, so ... Just something to think about.

At any rate, good luck!

When I bought Casper, it's radio was in poor shape anyway.

The front of the unit was cracked...I could literally take the housing off of the unit surrounding the dial and the power button.

My hubby was trying to get it to select AM/FM, and it wouldn't do that, and he pressed a little too hard and cracked that housing as well.

Finally, I just gave up and bought a sweet aftermarket head unit.
