a nice head unit will make the biggest difference...speakers in your door and back seat are 6.5.....i say head unit first...then speakers if you want clarity...then maybe a 10 inch sub for the deeper sutff unless you want to be really loud

Morning Kellyshair,

Naw, there is no way for an aftermarket deck to look as good as the factory one. If you look at the curvature of the dash and deck, it would be very hard to replicate it. There are 'fit kits' that make it look well done, but not stock.

IMHO, speakers are going to make a bigger difference. Spend decent money on them, you won't regret it. And, later, replace the head unit and install the woofer at that time. You will be impressed.

Crutchfield.com is a great resource and place to shop, but be sure to check out your local sound shops too. Sometimes you can find stuff on the shelf at great prices.

Good luck, and have fun,

CaL

I second the advice about Crutchfield.com. They always have great deals. You can put in your make model & year and it will show you everything that will fit. I haven't bought anything from them yet, but everything I've heard about them has been great. I guess their tech line is really good too.

Good Luck.

I have the Monsoon sound system so it sounds really good, but using my iPod w/an FM modulator really sucks! So much interference. I'm going to get it wired directly to the deck. I also have a 10" sub and amp and have gotten a box ordered from our local electronics guru to put it in my trunk.

I like the looks of my factory stereo, too. I'm also starting with the sub and direct wiring of my iPod to see what that does.

Best thing to do for the iPod - get the gadget that goes on the CD changer cable. I've got one of those and my car's MP3 player sounds awesome (well, as good as it can with the rest of the stock non-Monsoon audio system). It works by fooling the head end into thinking there is a VW CD changer and allows you to select the CD inputs for the audio inputs.

Oh - and if you want replacement speakers - 6.5 - 6.75 inch for the door and back panel.

What I've got you can't get anymore - it was a hobbyest's version that had some RCA audio inputs and some preprogrammed chips to activate the audio inputs.

You can find a commercially built version at Crutchfield - couple different varieties depending on what you want to do. Some that integrate the iPod very closely, others that are more generic (like mine).

It looks like you can spend from $70 - $150.

Ok. This evening, my husband came home with one of those outfits that connect my iPod through my cassette player. It sounds a whole lot better and it was only $20. I would still like to eventually do as you said above, but this is a lot better than the FM modulator I was using. Thx!!

There are differences between the various brands of the cassette adapters - Sony seems to be pretty good, Radio Shack not quite so much I'm glad you're happy with yours for now.

absolutely

Scosche makes the best looking ones that don't have any extra crap sticking out. most car-audio shops should be able to order it. They make one that says it's for the beetle, but this is the one you'll need if you have a flip-down face on your stero.

This past weekend I installed a Pioneer deck with the ipod adapter and a 10" sub. Sounds great and I'm pretty happy with the install. But... I was not impressed by the quality of the Scosche kit. The radius of the face seemed wrong and it was a touch too big. I'm not sure what to do at this point....

My $0.02
