Default will not pass smog w/o factory player?

I had installed a aftermarket cd player and someone told me that it will not pass smog! Just wondering why would that happen and is it possible to fix?

I don't think that's true. I passed a smog with my after-market CD player.

if the radio is wired wrong, it will mess up the scan port, witch will make the inspector's scan tool un-able to read the smog output. I had no problem with my aftermarket stuff.

It may not be wired wrong but just have the harness adapter that does not work with the K-line. The K-line wire is what causes the OBD-II scan tools not to be able to access the ECU, not just limited to inspections but VAG-COM and dealerships as well.

Best bet is find someone close that has a VAG-COM and see if they can access your ECU. If they can then you can sleep easy, if not you may need to see about getting a different adapter for the radio that works with eh K-line.

The tech at Surecut City doesn't seem very confident in his ability to install a system. I would say as long has you haven't had any electrical issues since the install he got lucky and installed the radio properly.

Let's talk about the K Line for a moment. I heard the K line is brown w/ blue stripe AND brown w/ orange stripe. Maybe I'm just blind and looking on the wrong harness, but it looks like that lines up to speaker outputs. Could somebody clear up for me? Or can somebody chime in about a harness that they KNOW works. I currently have a METRA harness, and that's not it.

I just went to the dealership today to have a new speed sensor installed, and I had to pull my aftermarket HU so they could get a read on their computer to diagnose the CEL. It was the first I heard of it.

Thanks,

Jonathan

I actually just got off the phone with a tech at Crutchfield about 45 minutes ago, and he was at a loss. He asked around to see if anybody knew anything about it. They were all stumped and didn't know how to help me. I was impressed at how fast they picked up the phone. However, I wasn't too impressed with the I don't know what to tell you response. He said I should maybe try google and see what I could find

That is why I stay away from outfits like Circuit City etc. for technical info and I would never let shops like that with-in a mile of my car.

The proper installation of an aftermarket audio system will not stop one from passing smog, the "K" wire carries data and should be left completely disconnected when an aftermarket head unit is introduced, many of the harness kit companies and installers out there were or are not aware of this which can and has resulted in voltage entering the "K" wire, this can cause vehicle and vagcom damage.

The "K" wire is not a problem, just don't connect it to anything when using a audio harness and an aftermarket head unit but one should always be aware of where the "K" wire is when working inside the dash etc.

This is true. I have taken my car to 7 different smog places at this point. It would not pass because the computer couldn't read the car's computer... due to the radio. My husband is in the process right now of doing the K wire thingy... i'll let you know if this fixes the issue.

I love the sarcasm ... brookly bridge... blah blah blah <wink> i'm just glad YOU haven't had this issue. Maybe it's something to do with the computers used here in California? I don't know... but 7 places have told me the same thing. Even the dealership told me to BUY (I wonder why?) a stock radio and reinstall it to fix the problem.
