Default 2005 New Beetle with Monsoon system HISSING

I've got a 2005 New Beetle GLS with the Monsoon system in it. I noticed a rather annoying hissing sound when I turned on my stereo tonight and wondered if anyone else has heard this (I searched for "hiss" but found no results in the forum)?

The hiss is a constant noise level and seems to always be there, whether SAT, CD, FM, etc. is selected. The hissing sound does not get louder (or softer) with volume adjustment, it's just always there.

I find it hard to believe that I would have "blown" my speakers, but this sound is annoying since I hear it during quieter music or talk radio. I know that speakers always have some static noise, but this seems louder than normal.

Any ideas, tips, or explanations are greatly appreciated. Thanks very much.

Things I would check:
Wiring harness to amp.
Wiring harness to back of monsoon unit.

Questions:
Has any recent work been done to the car?
Were any new electronics added to the car?

No wiring or messing with the car. No new electronics installed. Maybe it's just normal speaker static, because I don't hear it all the time when I am driving. I guess the engine and wind noise plus the music cover up the hiss sound. Or maybe I am just hearing things.

Or maybe Herbie's stereo is just haunted.

I have always had the hissing on low volume "min". I do not hear it while driving. There have been several reports about owners having this problem.

Awesome. (Well, awesome in the sense that nothing is broken. Just annoying.) Now I can rest easier. Thanks, glad to know I am not the only one with this happening.

I second that ^. I have my Monsoon amp with an Alpine HU and at min volume there is still quite a bit of signal noise. Listening to music and road noise all but mask it. You will hear some alternator/engine wine on AM. If you hear it during any other mode you might want to check grounds.

I have this same problem with my monsoon system. It started about a year ago and has gotten progressively worse...to the point where it's hard to listen to anything at low volume. I was considering replacing the speakers, but after reading this maybe I'll check the wiring first....now....where is that pesky amp??

Should be under the rear hatch deck on the driver's side.

Anyone know how to remove the side panels in the rear. I've searched the forums and can't seem to find a how-to on removing the rear side panels to expose the speakers...
Thanks

Now the lower panel speakers on both the left and right doors are making crackly sounds. I've never listened to my music loud enough to where I would have blown the speakers, but it sure sounds like they're F'ed up. Anyone else have an issue like this?
