Default Remove radio/check engine light warning??

Okay so I went to the dealership yesterday and was inquiring about adding an aftermarket radio to the NB. The lady at the counter said she reccomends against it due to the check engine light misreading when changing to an aftermarket radio. She said the fact radio is tied into the computer and will misread when installing my radio.

Is this true, or was she blowing smoke...you know where?

She is very misinformed

There are alot of us that have installed aftermarket radios in our Beetles. The only thing you have to do is when installing it is to make sure not to hook up anything to the K wire.
If you hook up the K wire the only thing that will happen is to mess up any scan tool that is hooked up but any aftermarket radio will not trip the check engine light.

Oh she knew what she was saying. The trick is to leave that k-line off the new radio though.

But that's true, it'll show up in future scans as if the radio wasn't there. (since it's not plugged in) Big woop!?

But some dealerships will refuse service [because if the k-line ISN'T removed, and is plugged into something like 12v.... it'll cook their $30K computer] if there's an aftermarket headunit. Ask your service writer.

So the trick is just say no to the K line. I just bought an install wiring kit. I dont have it yet, but would you think the diagram on that would indicate the same as you're saying? If not, is there a color wire I should look for?
