Default CD changer problems...

I've had my 1999 NB for over a year now, and I've always had a problem with the CD changer. I guess it's the factory one- it's a 6 CD changer (I don't know any of the technical stuff, I'm not good with any of that) in my trunk. It worked off and on, and when it wasn't working, it said "CD Error" and did the incredibly annoying beeping thing as it went through every CD. I checked the manual, my CD's aren't scratched, and everything's in properly. Sometimes, when the car would be jarred (like slamming the trunk, etc.), the CD player would either start or stop working. Then it completely stopped working for about 6 months. Recently, a man from my church took a look at it and didn't think any wires were ruined, so he thought there must be a problem with the actual changer. He tapped on it a few times, and it worked then for about a day, but now it has stopped again.

So what I'm asking is this: Does anyone know what my problem could be? And if I do need a new CD changer, where can I get one, and what is the average price? Thanks so much!

I had an issue like this when I installed my PhatBox MP3 player. I kept thinking it was a problem with the player, or maybe the cable connection on the bottom of the player, but it turned out to be where the cable connects to the back of the radio in the dash. But first, have you checked the cable where it plugs into the CD changer? There are 2 screws at the top of the mount that you can remove, and that will let you pull the whole assembly out. I think there are a couple more screws holding the cable to the unit, but I don't remember for sure. If that looks good, you can check behind the head unit. Problem with that is that you need a set of radio removal keys, and even after I got those I had to take part of the dash apart to get to the cable itself.

Check the cable on the bottom of the changer, and if that doesn't fix it for you let us know and I can try to walk you through the radio stuff.

Best of luck!
